Quiet Before the Storm
what if we didn't see it as a storm?
I would often tell people this is why I wake up before my kids. No one else in the house is awake. Everything feels at peace and still. So, of course. I believed the old saying quiet before the storm.
However, I had a dear friend of mine challenge me. “Why do you consider the house being awake a storm?”
👀😮💨😅 (just a few of the emotions I felt immediately after she asked)
I sat with it and realized it was another saying we repeat because we have heard it for years but never sat to take the moment and think about it. And it didn’t really hit me until this mornings quiet before … guess we have to create a new saying.
Usually, when I wake up and see that it is way before 6am, I say a prayer then go back to sleep because I have a son who has a natural clock in his body like his mama that says “its 7 o’clock. you need to get up”. But there was something different about today. Instead of turning back over until my actual alarm went off, I decided to get an early start.
I have been able to spend unhurried quiet time with God. I ate strawberries without scarfing them down because little eyes think mine look better than theirs. I completed 3 more modules of a course I’ve been enrolled in and avoiding since last year. I even unsubscribed and decluttered my email 🤯 (I was also able to type this post)
In all of this, the one thing I noticed that was different from previous times is not just that waking up earlier gives me the ability to accomplish more but that waking up earlier and getting my personal quiet time allows me to extend that peace and stillness to my family when they wake up!
I used to think the girls were out of their minds waking up at 3:30 in the morning but now, I am starting to see the method to their madness and maybe it was never madness all along… hmm there goes another saying. Maybe we will dive into that one next 🤷🏽♀️
Until next time, what are some sayings you heard growing up but have made the decision to stop saying or shift the perspective behind it?
